Eat Local, Eat Fresh, Eat Well

Almost every weekend, we hop in the car and go for a drive to explore some new part of the five New York boroughs or upstate or along the Jersey Shore.  This past weekend, I couldn’t help but notice that it’s prime season for farmers’ markets.  Fresh from the farm veggies and fruits, homemade jams and sauces, colorful flats of flowers, and even a few crafts.  One of my favorite markets in upstate New York is the Saugerties Farmers Market, which opens this Saturday!

Local Harvest has a great website to help you find a farmers’ market near you.  They also have a great shopping section where you can order fresh seasonal produce, infused oils, seeds, gift baskets, cheeses … basically just about anything fresh, natural, and food related [oh and soap and candles too!].   I think I’m going to try the Raspberry Jalepeno Jam from Brambleberry Farms in Pequot Lakes, Minnesota.

Here is a recipe from Mommy Gourmet to put some of that fresh produce to use!

If you happen to come across some mouth watering pomegranates, here is a recipe from Eat Real that will literally melt in your mouth.

Another great resource for info on connecting with and protecting America’s farms is American Farmland Trust.  Check out their “Growing Local” campaign.  If you have a local market you would like to share, please email me a photo[s] and the location, and why you love it!  Happy Eating!
