Diapers – Cloth or Disposable?

I use disposable diapers.  Cloth diapers just aren’t a practical solution for me, and I am ok with that.  I am not necessarily comfortable with the plastic and waste that ends up in our landfills from the use of disposables, nor am I a big fan of the energy and water used to launder cloth diapers.  But now there are new options; eco-friendly disposables, “hybrid diapers”, all-in-ones, and pocket diapers – all of which I will give you the low-down on so you can make your own decision.

Thrify Ways to Give a Room New Life

There aren’t enough hours in a day or enough days in a weekend.  It is Monday already and time to talk about “Things I Like”.  One of my favorite things is decorating and redecorating the home we live in now and the home we will one day have.  All of this decorating is completely imaginary … I do it in my daydreams as I flip through the pages of a magazine or click through pages on the internet or walk through the streets of my neighborhood, drawing inspiration from beautiful things I see.  Money is no object in my make-believe design frenzy, but in reality I have a budget and can’t afford to buy new furniture and fixtures every month.  Instead, I have come up with a few low-cost ways to breathe some new life and color into any home.

“Lazy Sunday”

I have decided that Sundays are going to be my ‘day off’ from blogging.  The weekends are just too busy with a baby in tow.  I swear, just going to the supermarket can become an all day affair.

Check back on Monday for all new posts and in the meantime, get out and enjoy the spring!  Before you go, take in some of this beautiful collage art from Pyglet Whispers

Adorn your presents with these adorable flower doll gift tags [or just keep them all for yourself!].

And these ACEO [Art Cards Editions and Originals] cards are soooo pretty and artfully inspirational.

Saturday: “Laugh Out Loud”

I’m sure that like me, most of you receive an IM or email at least once a week containing a ridiculous joke, picture, or YouTube video.  Today I am paying homage to those quirky virals with my own twist.  Keeping with the catergory themes of the blog, I bring you my picks for the funniest, quirkiest, and downright weirdest creations I have come across this week.

I found this outrageous “Shark Attack Hat” in a knitting forum at Craftster, where one of their mottos is “Cute Doesn’t Need a Reason”.  Even more outrageous than the hat itself [which is actually kind of cute] is the poster’s comment, “I saw the dead fish hat pattern and loved the idea”.  Seriously?

I was first introduced to Margaux Lange’s creations when a friend of mine purchased one of her rings for his girlfriend.  They are strange, but in a good way.  Necklaces, rings, brooches, bracelets, earrings, and custom works.

If you are here in NYC, she’s going to be at the BUST Spring Fling Craftacular this Sunday in Brooklyn.

When I first came across these baby head pottery creations by Sue Kniffin Davidson of Kniffin Pottery, I was a little creeped out, but I must admit they have really grown on me and I think I totally want an upsidedown baby head bowl or mug.  I’m not sure I would eat my cereal or drink my coffee out of one, but it would definitely make for a conversation piece on the mantle or bookshelf.

And that’s it for today, folks.  Enjoy the weekend!!!

It’s Friday: “Let’s Get Personal”

I have almost completed my first week of blogging and thought it was about time I shared a little about who I am and what this blog is all about.

I grew up in a small town in Ohio and moved to New York City 14 years ago.  For the past three years I have been living in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn.  When I first moved to the city, I worked as a waitress and model and then onto a string of jobs in fashion and advertising.  I eventually ended up in the music industry, where I handled international marketing and public relations for about seven years.  I then went to work for a photography agency as a talent rep and producer.  Blah, blah, blah.  After finding out I was pregnant with my first baby, my other half and I decided that I would stay at home and focus on being a mommy.  Michael works as a Senior Art Director at a boutique ad agency and is a loving and supportive father.

Here is a picture of us on Mother’s Day on our way to brunch:

And one of Ava enjoying her first taste of peas!!

I feel blessed to have this precious time with our daughter day in and day out, but need some sort of creative outlet.  I just resumed rehearsals with the band I am in [I sing … and promise to post a song soon], but I wanted to be able to share my experiences and finds with other moms and like-minded people.  Ava is about to turn six months old, just started crawling, and just sprouted her first tooth.  The photo of her screaming in the big sunglasses was taken when she was two weeks old and was the inspiration for Furious Shirley.

For each day of the week, there will be a different theme featuring products and inspiration from myself, independent creators, and moms just like you.  Here’s the breakdown:

Mondays – “Things I Like” – cute things, things I can’t live without, good advice, submission reviews, etc.
Tuesdays – “All About the Babers” – everything baby
Wednesdays – “I’m Hungry” – recipes, kitchen gadgets, food related topics
Thursdays – “Get Dressed” – fashion and trends
Fridays –  “Let’s Get Personal” – interviews with interesting people
Saturdays – “Laugh Out Loud” – things that make me and hopefully you smile
Sundays – “Lazy Sundays” – miscellaneous post day

I want this blog to grow to be a portal for creative minded people to share themselves and their workIf you have a product, service, recipe, etc. that you think should be featured/reviewed on the blog, please email me.

Thursday: “Get Dressed”

Little Ava [aka Furious Shirley] is just about to turn six months old and I can finally fit back into three pairs of my pre-baby jeans!  Getting back into shape has been tough – I gained close to 65 pounds during my pregnancy thanks to my, “Hey, if I’m going to get fat anyway I might as well eat whatever I want” attitude.  And unfortunately, whatever I wanted was ice cream.  I have no time to get to the gym, so I have had to come up with ways to combine working out with play time.  Ava loves watching me do floor exercises while she rolls around on her play mat.  I count reps out loud to sneak in some number fun and it amuses her to watch my legs going up and down and up and down.  I’m pretty sure it would amuse just about anyone – lol.  For cardio, I usually “dance”.  I put that in quotes because dancing consists of jumping jacks, squats, lunges, and some ridiculous flailing about in time to the music to keep the babers entertained.  So far it has been working and I am down to my last 18 pounds!  Getting dressed is probably one of the most frustrating times of the day for me because I’m not happy with the way my body looks in anything anymore.  So, today’s fashion focus is going to be accessories because a cute bracelet or bag will always be cute no matter what your weight.

I’ll start off with my favorite mother’s day gift – a personlized birthstone sterling tag necklace from MamaBethBling.  There are several variations to choose from and the price is just right at $22 USD.

And what would a post about accessories be without a great bag?  A purse is a great way to add some color and flair to any outfit and Bayan Hippo has a great collection of colorful and stylish purses that are also eco-friendly!

It’s Wednesday and “I’m Hungry”

I love cooking, but I’m not very good at sticking to a recipe.  I like to just look in the fridge, see what I have on hand and come up with something [hopefully] delicious.  I don’t have time for elaborate dinners or ingredient heavy dishes, so I try to keep meals healthy, flavorful, and most importantly simple.  Today’s recipe is for a refreshing Green Apple Salsa that can be used several different ways.

original recipe

GREEN APPLE SALSA – recipe by Shannon Young
[serves 3-4ppl]
1 green apple
1/2 large red onion
1 cucumber
Handful of fresh chopped cilantro
[salt, pepper, lemon juice to taste]

Dice or lightly food process [you want it to be slightly chunky] ingredients and serve on pita or tortilla chips!

Toss a few spoonfuls back into the processor for a couple more pulses, then mix with a tablespoon or two of mayonnaise for a crisp and tangy sandwich accompaniment!

Mix a few spoonfuls of the salsa into your ground beef, chicken, or turkey [I made it with my turkey burgers last night and it was delicious] to give your burger some flair!

Add about 1 cup of plain yogurt and liquefy for a great springtime chilled soup!  Chop up some fresh dill or mint and toss that in too if you have it handy!

I hope you enjoy this recipe.  Check back every Wednesday for more cooking related features!  Have an original recipe you think my readers or I will like?  Email me!  Bon Apetit!

Tuesday: “All About the Babers”

Is Anything Safe?

BPA in bottles, Phthalates and Parabens in bath products, Pesticides in food, and the list just goes on and on.  As if I needed more things to worry about as a first time mom!  I try to be as ‘organic’ as possible when it comes to my little one, but it isn’t easy.  Many products labeled ‘natural’ aren’t and when there seems to be a new toxin to look out for every day, things can get confusing.  I have had people say to me, “What’s the big deal?  Our parents used that stuff on us and we’re just fine,” but are we?  Am I willing to take the chance and use products containing ingredients that can cause a wide range of problems including early onset of puberty in girls and uro-genital abnormalities in boys, diabetes, obesity, cancer, skin irritation, and ADHD?  The answer is NO.

I reccommend checking out Safe Mama, a wonderful website dedicated to providing up to date information regarding recalls and non-toxic eco living.  It’s also a good idea to spend some time at the EWG’s Cosmetic Safety Database, a safety guide for the personal care items and cosmetics you have in your own showers, medicine cabinets, and make-up bags.

The Madeline Bea Soap Co. has a great alternative to baby wipes – Owl Naturale Cleaning Solution is made with wholesome ingredients as opposed to harsh chemicals.  They also offer several soap options for baby and lots of great products for mommy too!

Learning is Fun

We all want our children to be geniuses and this first physics book and set of flash cards for “baby nerds” from Tiffany Ard are perfect gifts for any future ivy league scholar.

Babies start learning in the womb and the first five to eight years of life present such an important window for development.  Stimuate your baby’s brain TODAY!

It’s Monday and Time for “Things I Like”

We’ll start off with these and if I have time between playing with, changing, and feeding the babers I may add more throughout the day.

Magazines.  I love flipping through the pages and gathering ideas for my home and life, reading helpful tips and inspiring stories, checking out the latest clothing and makeup trends, and occassionaly getting a gossip fix.  With so many titles out there, I would be paying a fortune in subscription fees if I were reading all of the magazines I wanted to … but not anymore.

With packages as low as $4.95/month, Maghound lets me choose 3 or more magazines to receive each month and I can cancel or switch titles at anytime.  It’s like Netflix for magazines.  Awesome.  No hassles, no strings, just pure reading entertainment.

Loungewear. Just saying it is relaxing.  Grown-up pajamas.  Soft, comfy, and sometimes even sexy.  Like this organic kimono from VivaTerra

Or these super cute hand knitted booties [also from VivaTerra] –

And these ultra soft bamboo yoga pants from Sandmaiden I found on Etsy

With so many cute and comfortable options, you can spend your mornings/evenings lounging around in style.  Ahhhhh.
