Underwater Dreams

I am finally taking a few moments to sit down … no unpacking, no cleaning, no hanging curtains … just me on the couch with the internet.  Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

I’m not sure if I found these photos or if they found me … just what I was in the mood for – tranquil, mysterious, and completely captivating.  Born in Moscow and now living in the Bahamas [so jealous], Elena Kalis has been shooting these underwater scenes [with fairytale inspiration/interpretation] for the past year with her children and friends.  Spellbinding … beautiful … I love them!  Go ahead and hold your breath … happy endings are all around you.

Fun with Food – Art, Books, and Gourmet White Castle

I’ve been a little behind on my posts the past week or so … so much going on!  Ava is approaching the nine month mark and is more active than ever [what on Earth will I do when she starts walking?!?!].  She loves pulling herself up on anything she can reach and her new favorite hobby is taking things out of boxes or off of shelves and throwing the contents onto the floor for me to pick up so she can do it all over again.  And we are planning a move in the next month or so [more details on that to come]!!  I’ve started several posts that I haven’t had the time [or energy] to finish, but today I am determined to hit that “publish” button!

It’s no secret that little ones love to play with their food, but now it seems to be all the rage for adults too.  The only difference is that we adults call it Art instead of a mess!

Brazilian artist, Vanessa Dualib, turned her passion for playing with food into a book rightfully titled, “Playing With Food”.  This book is fun to look at and although I don’t think it was her intention, gives me tons of ideas for getting kids to eat their vegetables!!

Doesn’t this look like a tasty tapas platter you might find at some popular eatery?

Guess again!  It’s all made from this fast food order from White Castle!!  For more gourmet fast food creations, check out Fancy Fast Food!

This installation by talented artist, Hanna Von Goeler, is titled “Biogen” and drew inspiration from the genetic engineering of tomatoes.  The wire sculpture is covered in dried tomato skins that have been sewn together.

And to round up today’s fun food post, I leave you with the twisted foodie blog, Insanewiches.  The title says it all [insane sandwiches].

It’s Friday: “Let’s Get Personal”

I have almost completed my first week of blogging and thought it was about time I shared a little about who I am and what this blog is all about.

I grew up in a small town in Ohio and moved to New York City 14 years ago.  For the past three years I have been living in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn.  When I first moved to the city, I worked as a waitress and model and then onto a string of jobs in fashion and advertising.  I eventually ended up in the music industry, where I handled international marketing and public relations for about seven years.  I then went to work for a photography agency as a talent rep and producer.  Blah, blah, blah.  After finding out I was pregnant with my first baby, my other half and I decided that I would stay at home and focus on being a mommy.  Michael works as a Senior Art Director at a boutique ad agency and is a loving and supportive father.

Here is a picture of us on Mother’s Day on our way to brunch:

I feel blessed to have this precious time with our daughter day in and day out, but need some sort of creative outlet.  I just resumed rehearsals with the band I am in [I sing ... and promise to post a song soon], but I wanted to be able to share my experiences and finds with other moms and like-minded people.  Ava is about to turn six months old, just started crawling, and just sprouted her first tooth.  The photo of her screaming in the big sunglasses was taken when she was two weeks old and was the inspiration for Furious Shirley.

For each day of the week, there will be a different theme featuring products and inspiration from myself, independent creators, and moms just like you.  Here’s the breakdown:

Mondays – “Things I Like” – cute things, things I can’t live without, good advice, submission reviews, etc.
Tuesdays – “All About the Babers” – everything baby
Wednesdays – “I’m Hungry” – recipes, kitchen gadgets, food related topics
Thursdays – “Get Dressed” – fashion and trends
Fridays -  “Let’s Get Personal” – interviews with interesting people
Saturdays – “Laugh Out Loud” – things that make me and hopefully you smile
Sundays – “Lazy Sundays” – miscellaneous post day

I want this blog to grow to be a portal for creative minded people to share themselves and their workIf you have a product, service, recipe, etc. that you think should be featured/reviewed on the blog, please email me.
